Western Australia’s most delicious pies have been revealed, with four bakeries taking home top honours in The Official Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition. And there’s something for everybody to enjoy. Four Seasons Patisserie Cafe and Bakery in High Wycombe For those who enjoy the simple things in life, like a classic beef mince pie, you’ll want to head to Four Seasons Patisserie Cafe and Bakery in High Wycombe. The award-winning bakery has done it again, coming in second place for best ‘plain mince pie’ at the competition, which has been running for more than 30 years. The bakery was runner-up to Victorian-based bakery Whittlesea Bakehouse. The popular bakery, east of Perth, had 12 entries in the competition — up against 1500 plus pies from across the nation — and was proud to also take home 10 gold medals and two silvers. The bakery has now been named in the Official Great Aussie Pie Hall of Fame, too. While they didn’t take home best plain pie this year, they have won it in the past in 2018 and in 2015, among their many other awards. Regulars to the bakery congratulated the owners on Facebook, saying they had the “best pies ever” and “what can I say, still the best bakery”. WA may not have held on to its title for having the best plain pie, with Pinjarra Bakery winning last year, but three other bakeries also did WA proud at the 33rd competition. Jack’s Bakery in Mandurah Mandurah is now home to Australia’s best vegetarian and vegan pie, with Jack’s Bakery taking home top spot in the category for its vegetarian paella pie. They also took home a long list of gold, silver and bronze medals for many of their other pies, including the green chicken curry, chunky beef and slow-cooked BBQ pies. The bakery was thrilled with their “amazing results,” taking to Instagram to share the news. “We are sooooo very proud of everyone here at Jacks Bakery!!” they wrote. “Absolutely AMAZING results. We are very humbled and appreciative for not just the results but all of our wonderful staff and amazing customers who make achievements like this possible!” Miami Bakehouse in Greenfields If you have a sweet tooth, next time you’re driving down south, you might want to stop in at Miami Bakehouse, ‘WA’s most awarded bakery’, in Greenfields to pick up one of their apple pies. The bakery’s country apple and raspberry pie was picked as the nation’s best. The team also won a number of silver medals for their unique pie flavours, including kangaroo, red wine and juniper berry, ginger chilli pork and coconut chicken curry. The bakery also won best fruit mince pies in Australia back in 2020. In a post to social media, the bakehouse said its bakers were “still grinning from ear to ear” from the results. Mount Barker Country Baker in Mount Barker Meat lovers should add Mount Barker Country Baker as a pit stop on their travels. The renowned Mount Barker bakery took home first place for its slow-cooked BBQ pie. The pies were tasted by a panel of 13 judges who critiqued each one based on its general appearance, including the shape, colour, and size. As well as the quality, flavour, and texture of the filling, and whether the pastry had a visual flake (if it was puff pastry). In the gourmet category, pies were also judged on creativity. The competition was established in 1989 by John Ross and Craig Perry with “the aim of raising the quality standards of pies throughout Australia”.
